Why are Christmas Stockings so Important?

Handmade Christmas Stockings are the best way to add a touch of love and meaning to your Christmas Decorations.

Making stockings can be a really amazing and memorable time to spend with your family.

I have made several different DIY Christmas Stocking styles during the holidays. And yet, I still haven’t made the sewing patterns for you.

That is why this week I drafted the most beautiful Christmas Stocking Patterns in 4 sizes and made you this tutorial so you could choose whichever size fits better in your home.

I even made a super mini size that you can use to give candy to your coworkers or neighbors!!

Also, I wanted to make a very simple tutorial in which you didn’t have to struggle to put on the cuff piece on the small opening of the stocking…

So, I give you just that.

Why do we hang stockings at Christmas?

Do you know the heartwarming story behind hanging stockings at Christmas? It goes back to the legend of Saint Nicholas, a kind and generous Christian bishop.

According to legend, Saint Nicholas threw gold coins down a poor family’s chimney, landing in the stockings hung by the fireplace. This act inspired the tradition of hanging stockings at Christmas.

Nowadays, we still continue this tradition by hanging stockings on Christmas Eve and filling them with little gifts, candies, and treats. The stockings themselves are often in the colors of red and white, which are associated with Saint Nicholas.

Easy Christmas Stocking Free Pattern- Sewing Instructions.

The first thing we do before making our free pattern for Christmas stocking with cuff is to gather our materials. Here is what you are going to need for this project.

Materials:

Print and Assemble your Sewing Pattern.

Once you have downloaded the pattern, choose your preferred printing size. We have Letter, A4, and A0 options for this pattern.

Print this pattern in REAL SIZE. Then, trim the edges of each page so you can start assembling the pattern. Use the dotted lines to guide where you need to trim.

Place the pages next to each other, joining the square corners with their respective number (1,1,1,1- 2,2,2,2, etc).

Then, use your favorite pattern-making paper to trace the size you want to make for your Christmas Project. We have four sizes, from Mini to Large, with lengths ranging from 5 inches to 21 inches.

The one I am making in this tutorial is the size Medium, which measures 17″ tall. Personally, I think it is the standard size for a Christmas Stocking.

Follow the pattern-cutting directions to cut your pieces of fabric.

If you want to create a special look for your stocking, you can consider using a fun Christmas print fabric for the lining fabric.

Note: If you are interested in making a quilted Christmas stocking, you should quilt the pieces before following these instructions.

Sew the Cuff with the Leg and Lining.

Place the front of your main fabric leg pattern piece and the cuff with the right sides together.

Pin and sew at 1/2″. Open the pieces and press the seams towards the leg very carefully. Use low temperature so you don’t melt or burn the fleece.

Place the lining over with the right sides of the fabrics facing together on top of the other end of the cuff raw edges and pin along the edges.

Sew at 1/2″ and press the seams towards the leg.

Here is what it should look like.

Repeat on the other side.

Now, you are going to repeat these same steps but on the mirroring pattern pieces of your stocking.

This is how the right sides of the fabrics for the front and the back of your stocking pieces should look like.

Close the pattern pieces.

Place the front and the back pieces above each other with the right sides together, aligning the raw edges of the fabrics and the seams of the cuffs. Pin along the edges.

Sew at 1/2″ of seam allowance, leaving a space open on the lining back leg of about 3 1/2″ inches.

Make cuts and notches.

Now, we need to make snips around the curved edges of our stocking so that when we turn it to the right side, we can have smooth lines.

Use your fabric scissors and start making cuts along all the curves. On the heel and the toe of the pattern, the best way is to cut small triangles, as I did here. That way, when you turn the piece, those curves will have a cleaner and smoother shape.

Turn Inside Out and Close the Open Seam

It’s time to see your stocking on the right side!

Use the opening we left on the lining to turn your piece inside out and press.

Then, use an invisible seam to close the open seam.

You can also close it by making a straight seam with your sewing machine, as I did here.

Insert the lining piece into the main stocking and then fold the cuff towards the outside to get the classic Christmas Stocking look.

Add the Loop

Take a piece of store-bought bias tape (or you can make your own homemade bias tape with this tutorial).

Cut a 12″ long strip for the sizes Medium and Large and 8″ long for the size Small, or 4″ long for the size mini.

Sew the bias tape close with a top stitch and then fold it in half.

Align the raw edges of the bias tape on the inside of the stocking where the seams of the lining and the cuff meet.

Make a hand stitch to secure the loop to your stocking.

Secure the Lining

This step is optional, but I like to do it as it makes my stockings (especially the larger sizes) hold their shape better and keep the lining in place.

Align the seams of the lining with the seams of the main fabric piece.

Use a hand needle to pierce right where the seams meet from the lining to the outside. Do this a couple of times, and then make a knot on the side of the main fabric.

This is the side that the cuff will cover, so there will be no problem if we leave the knot there.

Christmas Stocking Decoration Ideas.

Decorating Christmas stockings can be a fun and creative activity. Here are some unique and creative ideas to make your Christmas stockings stand out:

Personalized Embroidery or Monogramming.

One way to make a Christmas stocking extra special is to add a personalized touch by embroidering the person’s name or initials on it. You can choose from a variety of festive colors and different font styles to make it visually appealing.

Just choose your favorite Christmas Color Palette and combine the different options in your Monograms. For instance, you could opt for bold and bright colors such as red, green, or gold, or you could go for more subtle shades such as white or silver.

The font style you choose can also make a big difference, as some fonts are more elegant and sophisticated while others are more playful and whimsical.

Ribbon and Bow Accents.

To add a special touch to your stockings, consider attaching ribbons and bows in colors that complement or contrast with the stocking itself.

You could create bows at the top of the stocking or weave ribbon through the fabric to create a more intricate design. With a little creativity, you can create a festive and unique decoration that will brighten up any room during the holiday season.

Pom-Pom Trim.

To add a charming and fuzzy border to your stocking, you can either glue or sew pom-pom trim along the edges.

Make sure to select colors that complement your holiday theme and enrich the stocking’s overall appearance. This simple yet creative touch will make your stocking stand out and add a cozy and joyful vibe to your holiday decor.

  1. Pattern and instructions are excellent. I made the medium however I added the extra 1/2 seam allowance all the way around. I made a memory keepsake stocking out of my granddaughter’s First Christmas outfits. I pieced the front and back of the stocking by fussy cutting the fabrics. I machine embroidered her name on the cuff. It turned out really well. Thank you for a great pattern.

  3. I made 4 large stockings for adult grandchildren. I have a lot of sewing experience, so I didn’t follow the assembly instructions — mistake on my part since I used minky fabric for stocking and cuff; cotton lining. My way caused me a lot of trouble since the layers of fabric were so thick. Had I followed the instructions for assembly, it would have been much smoother. I also used my embroidery machine to add names to the cuffs – turned out great! Thanks for pattern and tutorial. I was going to post a pic, but cannot find an option for that.

    • Hi Joy! Oh boy, yes. Minky fabric is super thick, but I bet they turned out so great. We don’t have an option for uploading pictures on the comments but you can tag us on any social media with the @mygoldenthimble anchor name. I am so excited to see your stockings.

  4. This was a great first ever sewing project for my 8 yr old grandaughter. She picked the Mini size and fell in love with sewing as we worked our way through your excellent tutorial. It really came out beautiful and she was very proud of it! The only thing I would do different would be to trim the seam allowances to 1/4 inch before turning right side out. Even with the clipping and notching, the 1/2 inch seam allowance leaves too much bulk, especially with the mini pattern.

      • Also, Penny wanted the outline of the mini to be the actual size, so I showed her how to add the seam allowance to the outside of the cut line, making the stocking a full inch wider. Honestly, I don’t know how you could turn the original pattern right side out with 1/2 in seam allowances!

  6. Just made the largest one using a Christmas tartan fabric with plain, white cotton for the cuff.
I also have some red fabric and green fabric, both the same pattern with little white reindeer faces and tiny stars along with some white fleece for the cuffs.
